Re-register your car in Munich
Moved to Munich with your car, or bought a used car that is still registered? In both cases the vehicle must be transferred – after a move without delay. We handle the re-registration (Ummeldung) at the Munich registration authority.

Which case applies to you?
- Moving to Munich from elsewhere in Germany: your car is transferred to your new Munich address – optionally with a new Munich plate.
- You bought a used car that is still registered: it is transferred to you as the new keeper (Halterwechsel) – wherever it was registered before.
- Moving within Munich: no re-registration needed; only the new address is entered in registration certificate part I.
- The car is already deregistered: that is a registration.
- Your car has foreign registration: different rules apply – contact us.
Can I keep the current number plate?
Usually yes – as long as the car is still registered at the time of the transfer. This applies when you move from another registration district and when you buy a registered used car (the previous owner's plate). If you prefer a new Munich plate, you get new plates – optionally a custom plate. We then need the current plates.

You don't need a new eVB number for a pure re-registration after moving – but do inform your insurer of your new address. When buying a used car, make sure you receive both parts of the registration certificate and a valid HU report. Without part II, a transfer is not possible.

- How soon after moving do I have to re-register?
- Without delay. Moving to another registration district requires prompt re-registration.
- Does the seller need to be present for a change of ownership?
- No – we only need your documents and the vehicle papers.
