Export licence plates in Munich

Selling your vehicle abroad or taking it with you when you leave Germany? You need export plates (Ausfuhrkennzeichen, often called customs plates). We apply for them at the Munich registration authority.

What you should know

Purpose: permanently transferring a vehicle abroad.
Validity: issued for a maximum of one year.
Insurance: you need a special insurance certificate for export plates. It is available from insurers, not from the authority – please arrange it in advance.
Roadworthiness test: the HU must be valid for the entire period of the export registration.
Who can apply: keepers with main residence in Munich, or people without a German residence who are staying in Munich. In individual cases the vehicle must be presented.
