Temporary licence plates in Munich

Bought a deregistered car and need to drive it home? Or need to take a deregistered car to its roadworthiness test? That's what temporary plates (Kurzzeitkennzeichen) are for. In Munich they are issued only at the registration authority on Eichstätter Straße – where we are every day anyway.

What you should know

Validity: up to six days from the day of application; they cannot be issued for a later date.
Germany only: valid only for test drives and transfers within Germany.
One vehicle: the plate is assigned to exactly one vehicle, which must be deregistered.
Without a valid HU: only trips to a testing station in the vehicle's registration district or a neighbouring one are allowed. After passing, you may drive throughout Germany.
Where to apply: at your main residence or where the vehicle is currently located (proof, e.g. purchase contract or dealer confirmation).
